Interviewer: Jean, you’ve been called “the first lady of philanthropy” by the press and have received numerous accolades for your work. What inspired you to begin your journey in philanthropy, and how did it evolve over the years?
Jean Shafiroff: Thank you for having me. My journey in philanthropy began early in life, inspired by my parents, who taught me the importance of giving back. I grew up understanding that helping others was not just a responsibility but a privilege. Over the years, this simple lesson evolved into a deep commitment to philanthropy. My work as a volunteer fundraiser, board member, and advocate for various causes has allowed me to make a tangible impact, which I’m deeply passionate about.
Interviewer: You’re involved in various causes, from women’s rights to animal welfare. How do you choose which causes to support, and what drives your passion for them?
Jean Shafiroff: I support causes that resonate deeply with my values. Women’s rights, the rights of underserved populations, health care, and animal welfare are all issues close to my heart. These are areas where I feel I can make a real difference. My Catholic faith also guides me, emphasizing the importance of compassion and service. I serve on the boards of organizations that reflect these values, such as the NY Women’s Foundation, Global Strays, and the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation. My goal is to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves and help bring about positive societal change.
Interviewer: Your involvement in so many charities is truly impressive. You chair eight to ten charity galas annually and host large cocktail parties for different charities in your New York homes. How do you manage to balance such a demanding schedule?
Jean Shafiroff: It’s a challenge, but I welcome it. Organization and time management are essential. I’m fortunate to have a great team that helps me coordinate the logistics of these events, but I’m also very hands-on. Each gala and event is an opportunity to raise awareness and funds for causes that need support, so I make sure to give each one the attention it deserves. It’s all about passion—when you’re passionate about your work, you find the time and energy to make it all work.
Interviewer: You’ve served on the boards of numerous prestigious organizations, such as the Southampton Hospital Foundation and the Mission Society of NYC. What have been some of the most rewarding aspects of your board service?
Jean Shafiroff: Serving on these boards has been incredibly rewarding because it allows me to contribute to these organizations’ strategic direction and sustainability. For example, my work with the Southampton Hospital Foundation has been crucial in supporting healthcare initiatives in the community. With the Mission Society of NYC, I’ve been able to help provide educational opportunities for underserved children. Being part of these organizations means I can help shape their future and ensure they continue positively impacting society.
Interviewer: You were the national spokesperson for American Humane’s “Feed the Hungry” COVID-19 program, which raised $1,000,000 to provide food for over 1,000,000 animals. What was that experience like, and what did it teach you about the power of collective action?
Jean Shafiroff: That was a significant project for me. The COVID-19 pandemic created unprecedented challenges, not just for people but for animals as well. As the national spokesperson for the “Feed the Hungry” program, I witnessed firsthand the power of collective action. The generosity of people across the country was overwhelming, and it reinforced my belief that when we come together, we can overcome even the most daunting challenges. Raising $1,000,000 was a testament to what we can achieve when we unite for a common cause.
Interviewer: You’ve been honored many times for your philanthropic work, including being named “Philanthropist of the Year” by Dan’s Papers. In September 2022, you were officially proclaimed the “First Lady of Philanthropy of New York” by the New York State Assembly. What do these recognitions mean to you?
Jean Shafiroff: I’m incredibly honored by these recognitions, but the real reward is the impact we can make through philanthropy. Awards and titles are outstanding acknowledgments, but they’re not why I do what I do. However, they help shine a spotlight on the causes I care about, which is invaluable. If these recognitions inspire others to get involved and give back, they’ve served a greater purpose.
Interviewer: Besides your philanthropic work, you’re a TV host and author. Tell us about your book, “Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life by What You Give,” and what motivated you to write it.
Jean Shafiroff: I wrote “Successful Philanthropy” to inspire and guide others on their philanthropic journeys. The book is a call to action, encouraging people to think about how they can give back in ways that are meaningful to them. It provides practical advice on how to get involved, whether you’re just starting or looking to deepen your commitment. I hope it helps people understand that philanthropy is not just for the wealthy—everyone can contribute in their way, whether through time, talent, or resources.
Interviewer: You’ve interviewed various influential figures on your TV show, “Successful Philanthropy”. How has this experience broadened your understanding of philanthropy and leadership?
Jean Shafiroff: Hosting “Successful Philanthropy” has been an incredible experience because it allows me to explore the many facets of philanthropy through the eyes of different leaders. Each guest brings a unique perspective, and I’ve learned so much from their experiences and insights. It’s broadened my understanding of how philanthropy can be approached and the various ways in which people are making a difference. These conversations also reaffirm my belief that leadership in philanthropy is about vision, empathy, and a commitment to serving others.
Interviewer: Your background is impressive, with degrees from Columbia University in Physical Therapy and Finance. You’ve also worked as a physical therapist and an investment banker. How have these experiences influenced your approach to philanthropy?
Jean Shafiroff: My background in both healthcare and finance has been instrumental in shaping my approach to philanthropy. Working as a physical therapist in an inner-city hospital gave me a firsthand understanding of the challenges faced by underserved populations. It reinforced the importance of compassion and the need to address systemic issues in healthcare. My experience in finance, on the other hand, provided me with the skills to manage and allocate resources effectively. It’s allowed me to bring a strategic mindset to philanthropy, ensuring that the organizations I support can maximize their impact.
Interviewer: Finally, Jean, what advice would you give to someone who wants to start their journey in philanthropy but doesn’t know where to begin?
Jean Shafiroff: My advice would be to start small but start somewhere. Philanthropy doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Begin by identifying causes that resonate with you and think about how you can contribute, whether through volunteering, donating, or raising awareness. The most important thing is to take that first step.
Once you start, you’ll find that the rewards far outweigh any challenges. Philanthropy is about making a difference, and everyone has the power to do that in their way.
Interviewer: Thank you, Jean, for sharing your incredible journey and insights. Your work inspires so many, and we’re grateful for the difference you’re making in the world.
Jean Shafiroff: Thank you. It’s been a pleasure speaking with you. I hope my story encourages others to find their paths in philanthropy and positively impact their communities.
